Voices for Utah Children is seeking a temporary, part-time Project Coordinator to assist with research on juvenile legal representation in Utah.

This research will be used to provide an update to our 2019 report “And Justice For All…Kids,” which illuminated issues with children appearing in juvenile court proceedings without a defense attorney present. The Project Coordinator will be central to the efficient and effective functioning of a multimember research team, and will report directly to Senior Policy Analyst Anna Thomas.

The Juvenile Indigent Defense Research Project Coordinator will:

  • Coordinate training and support for staff members and partners conducting court observations statewide (virtual and in-person where appropriate);
  • Develop a calendar of juvenile court proceedings in all counties and coordinate volunteer/staff assignments;
  • Collect, enter and maintain court observation data to be compiled for new report;
  • Act as central point of communication for all coordination with juvenile courts;
  • Provide support for all team members conducting court observations and/or public defender interviews;
  • Conduct virtual and/or in-person court observations as part of court observation team;
  • Arrange and conduct interviews with public juvenile defenders in various judicial districts;
  • Assist with writing, editing and data verification for report; and
  • Other duties related to coordination of report development project.

Qualified applicants will be: highly organized and very responsible; comfortable with a high volume of phone, email and Zoom/WebEx/Google Hangouts communication; proficient in basic Microsoft Excel functions; and committed to the equitable treatment of all Utah children. Spanish language comprehension a plus.

The Project Coordinator will work at least 10, and up to 20, hours per week, from September 2020 through December 2020. Compensation is $20 per hour.
