What was your favorite toy or game to play with as a child?
I didn't need a lot of toys or games. I spent a lot of time with my sister, cousins and friends swimming in the river behind our house in the summer and played in the snow in the winter whether it was jumping off the roof into a snowdrift, sledding, snowmobiling or ice skating on the river or on a pond nearby.
What was your favorite hobby or extracurricular activity as a child, and did you pursue it further later in life?
I just loved to be outside in nature. If I was inside I was reading a book (sounds really boring but I did live in the country!). My husband and I do have a little piece of property in the mountains where my children have developed the same love of nature.
What was your favorite thing about being a child, and do you try to hold onto that spirit as an adult?
I grew up very responsible and wanting to help people. I have been told I have an old soul. I try to continue helping and serving others.
What was the most challenging experience you faced as a child, and how did you overcome it?
I had what is now known as a crisis childhood. As a mother, I have done my best to break the cycle. I also love the field of psychology and it has helped me understand why people do the things they do.
What was the most valuable lesson you learned as a child, and how has it influenced your life today?
I was taught how to work hard and I am not afraid to "get my hands dirty." Because of that, I have achieved some pretty hard things such as getting my college degree (with honors :-) ) while working full-time, married, step-daughters and having babies. My youngest was 7 months old when I got my degree.
What advice would you give to your younger self, based on what you've learned throughout your life so far?
I was incredibly shy. The advice I would give my younger self is to not be so scared--of everyone and everything. You are enough.
