What was the most challenging experience you faced as a child, and how did you overcome it?
Poverty. When my mom had an accident at her job, we lost her income and had to rely on people's empathy. I remember the Salvation Army, coupons, and receiving help from our community. We didn't have much, but that experience shaped how I see service and how important it is to show up for others the way people showed up for us.
What was your favorite thing about being a child, and do you try to hold onto that spirit as an adult?
My favorite thing was watching how resilient my mom was despite all of the challenges she faced, and how she poured her love into her children. I absolutely try to hold onto that spirit: her strength teaches me every day how to show up for the people I care about, even when things are hard.
What was your favorite meal or dish that your family would make, and do you still enjoy it today?
My mom didn't make elaborate home-cooked meals, but she would scrape together coins to order us New York pepperoni pizza. It wasn't about fancy cooking, it was about her love and resourcefulness, finding ways to make us feel celebrated even when we didn't have much. I still love pepperoni pizza today, and every time I eat it, I'm reminded of her resilience and how she made something ordinary feel special.
What was your favorite toy or game to play with as a child?
Barbies. I spent hours with them, creating different worlds and stories.
What advice would you give to your younger self, based on what you've learned throughout your life so far?
The world is yours to conquer. Don't let anything stop you.
What was your favorite hobby or extracurricular activity as a child, and did you pursue it further later in life?
Reading. It gave me such a solid foundation for everything I do now: my love of writing, my passion for education, the way I communicate. It all started there.
Biography
Heidi Camacho is a senior communications manager with more than a decade of non-profit and not-for-profit experience. She currently works as a Senior Global Marketing Manager for Family Search, a non-profit organization. Before this role, Camacho worked at Mountain America Credit Union as a Public Relations Manager. In this position, she expanded underserved demographics’ equitable access to financial products and services. Camacho was a trusted voice for the Hispanic community as a reporter for Univision and also became a liaison with hundreds of non-profit organizations, community leaders, government agencies, and politicians. Heidi has spearheaded hundreds of news conferences, events, and publishing initiatives in the United States and abroad including countries in Asia, Central America, South America, and Africa. Milestones she holds dear to her heart include pioneering live broadcasts for youth fromNorthern Africa, executive producing a breaking news conference in partnership with the national Association for the Advancement of Colored people (NAACP), and receiving a Rocky Mountain Emmy nomination in 2021 for a story that covered COVID-19’s impact on southern Utah’s Native American community. Camacho is known for her advocacy for news coverage of Utah’s Venezuelan community. In recognition for these efforts, she received the Francisco de Miranda Award from La Asociación Venezolana de Utah.
